Jacksonville University is the home of Northeast Florida's only competitive collegiate sailing program. Currently a coed club sport regular member of the Southeastern Atlantic Sailing Association (SAISA), the JU Sailing team has improved over the last three years to qualify for the regional championships, which is the first step toward the national championships for the Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA). The JU Sailing team aims to be competitive at the national level within the next 3 to 5 years. Our competition regionally includes the College of Charleston, the University of South Florida, and Eckerd College—all have sent teams to the national championships in recent years and finished in either the top ten or top 15 consistently. The JU program stands poised to add another high level team to this growing region.
The JU Varsity Sailing Initiative
Our ten-year plan includes hiring a full-time coach, upgrading to varsity status, and raising funding toward building a dedicated sailing center as part of the university’s bold and exciting plans for a new waterfront recreation master plan. Currently our program is to be housed in the brand-new JU Marine Science Research Institute (MSRI) building beginning in fall of 2010. We share space in the MSRI with the JU Naval ROTC unit sailing team—our teams collaborate and share members, leadership, and use the JU fleet of sailboats.
The JU Sailing Team
The JU Sailing program membership ranges from 12 to 20 members with a group of high level men and women sailors who compete as the JU Sailing Team in SAISA events. All JU students are eligible to join the JU Sailing Club, which is partially funded by Student Activities and the JU Student Alliance. Club members are beginners to experts and we provide instruction for all levels from basic to collegiate race training. While coaching is currently provided by volunteers, the coaches are all active and competitive dinghy or one-design class sailors, with a faculty advisor acting as coach for the team.
Our Fleet of Sailboats
Our fleet consists of 8 C420 dinghies, 4 JY15 dinghies, and 4 Laser dinghies. We also have a Catalina 22 sloop, two Hobie Catamarans, and a Snipe dinghy. We sail from the shore of our campus, which is located directly on the St. John’s river. The St. John’s is a tidal river that extends to the Atlantic Ocean and provides access to a beautiful resource for sailing. Our program provides sailors for competitive sailing, cooperating with several competitive one-design sailing fleets and three well-known yacht clubs.
